'Empty' will create an Actor Group with no automatically assigned Items. The 'Mode' menu lets users choose which Items or Channels will be automatically added to the new 'Actor' when it is created- there are several options all dependent on the selection made prior to invoking the command. By default the 'Type' option is set to 'Actor' (and should remain that way), defining how the Group is treated once created. The 'Name' option defines the Name of the resulting Group that is created. LMB+clicking the 'Create a New Actor.' button then opens the 'New Actor' dialog box where the actual 'Actor' Group is created. To create an 'Actor', make sure to select all the target items you want to include and then LMB+click on the 'Actors' button. The main benefit to creating an Actor would be that is makes applying keyframes for all associated items easier. This could be an entire hierarchy of joints for a character, or it could be all the parts to a dump truck, an 'Actor' doesn't need to be a character at all. Additionally, the 'Pose' function stores specific keyframe values that can then be easily applied at any point along the timeline.Īn 'Actor' is simply a container that groups together related items. This allows users to quickly assign keyframes for all associated Channels, then save the Channels values as alternate layers using the 'Action' function, where each 'Action' is an alternate of the entire timeline. An Actor is a special type of ' Group', acting as a container that stores Items and/or Channels. These controls provide users with a streamlined method of animating in MODO. I just do this for relaxation / fun.Across the bottom of the 'Animation' interface, under the keyframing and timeline transport controls is located the Actor, Action and Pose control bar.

MODO 801 ANIMATION UPGRADE

The only thing putting me off is the cost of 1 year is 3/4 of the cost of an upgrade to my perpetual Modo. I am very seriously considering never upgrading Modo and getting Maya Indie. I am about to get Houdini Indie (I have played extensively with Apprentice and it is time to move on). I may resubscribe to Modo Indie (the being a year behind is my biggest gripe) I may one day upgrade my Modo license. If I want my Modo fix 801 usually provides it.

MODO 801 ANIMATION FULL

I have a full Modo 801 (so very out of date) licence. In the interests of full disclosure I have had a subs to Modo Indie in the past currently I don't. If you want to get a job in the industry. Personally I have tried often to embrace it but always put it down. It is a disruptor in the market - and indeed pressure from it and helped make the Indie offerings a reality. If you want to go Blender do so - it is an interesting application for sure - but no silver bullet, and will not destroy all paid applications. Houdini / Maya / Max do not have this problem.

MODO 801 ANIMATION FULL VERSION

One problem Modo has is that they have to cripple the Indie version since it they make it a functionally rich as the full version (just the revenue limits) they would loose many full licences holders who would switch to Indie. Maya Indie (or Max for that matter) can be got on their own, and I think in many ways are a better option than (full) Modo at this point. However Houdini Indie on its own is not really enough - for now (but not forever hopefully) you need a direct modelling companion application. Both Houdini and Maya Indie offer very minimal restrictions for about 3 times the cost - a massively better price point in my view. If you want to do animation forget it and get Maya Indie. If you want to do simulations or procedural modelling forget it, get Houdini Indie. It tires to do a lot of other stuff - but here I think things are a lot more patchy. In my view Modo excels as Model -> UV -> Render. If you really like it move to the full version for which you can either get a perpetual licence or a subscription. If you like it, and can live with the restrictions, and don't mind being a year behind it is very affordable. If you don't like it you have blown £44 - in my view a so what amount - it was an experiment.

There are big limits with the Indie version, it is a year behind, and there is some talk about them changing up the model (maybe a free non-commercial licence). Modo has for me the best subdivision direct modelling experience. An insignificant cost for the duration of the experiment. Get the 6 month subscription and give it a try in UK money it is 25 pennies a day.
